Manukau and Māngere are the heart of South Auckland. The local Ōtara Market is bursting with life and flavour, with stalls offering hāngi, as well as fried bread, chop suey and bacon and egg or steak rolls. Further south in the Franklin district lies Pukekohe, where the nutrient-rich volcanic ash soils and warm, temperate climate produce an expansive range of potatoes and other vegetables. More specialised vegetables include baby cos lettuce, kale, fennel bulb, sprouting broccoli and Asian vegetables.
