There is more to dining at the Mount than the row of waterfront cafés overflowing with walkers, beachgoers and tourists. Some of the most exciting food on offer at the Mount can be found at the many markets and festivals, especially during summer. Here, local restaurants and food caravans serve everything from delicious dumplings to raw desserts, Mexican treats to sweet crêpes.
In the same vein, you'll discover local favourites hidden off the main drag from Wild One Wholefoods on Prince St, George Café in Omanu, which grows much of its own produce, or the wicked Johney's Dumplings served with an array of craft beer at Rising Tide.
Mount Maunganui stretches south until it merges with the sprawling Papamoa. Once a culinary wasteland, things are changing with a couple of great eateries opening, most notably Henry & Ted at the south end.
