As part of Feast Matariki 2021, Eat New Zealand and Potatoes New Zealand are proud to present…

The Great Taewa Hunt: A photography and food-storytelling competition that seeks to emerge and gather the images and stories of this taonga or treasure. These tubers are also known as Māori potatoes and they have a rich history throughout Aotearoa. However these prized potato varietals are facing various challenges, including their susceptibility to disease and a declining Taewa population. There is currently no programme to protect the seed stock – but we know there are a bunch of individuals and growers throughout the country harvesting this hard-to-find treasure.

This competition will be an opportunity for all taewa-lovers to hunt down the story including keen photographers, eaters, growers, iwi, farmers markets and chefs.

We're fortunate to have the formidable and self-proclaimed taewa lover Nadia Lim joining the hunt by coming on board as our official competition judge.

The winning photo and story will receive a cash prize of $500, the image will be published on Stuff.co.nz, and receive a copy of Nadia Lim's cookbook Vegful.

Entries will need to include a high res image (max 10MB) and a short story description (max 100 words) and will be collected via the Official Entry Form HERE. There will be a maximum of three entries per person.

Entries open on Friday 18th June at 9am.

Entries close on Thursday 8th July at 5pm.

The competition will be open to only New Zealand residents.

Winners will be announced on Thursday 15th July.

Image entries will be published throughout the competition period across various Eat New Zealand and Potatoes New Zealand platforms.
